Search for missing Whitehorse man enters fourth week; volunteers sought

Yukon RCMP and volunteer search teams are entering a fourth week of looking for Gerald James Balmforth, 53, who was last seen in Whitehorse's Takhini River subdivision on October 13. Police describe him as 6'4" with short brown hair and green eyes, and say he was wearing a neon green motorcycle jacket and flip-flops. Helicopter and drone teams, Yukon Search and Rescue, and members of the Champagne and Ajax First Nations are assisting, and organizers are calling for more volunteers, while some searchers have criticized the police response. Residents are asked to check their properties and outbuildings and to report any information to police.

Whitehorse seeks $210M in federal funding, including Whistle Bend fire hall

The City of Whitehorse and the Yukon government have submitted federal infrastructure funding applications totalling about $210 million, including roughly $160 million in applications that include a new Whistle Bend fire hall, Mayor Kirk Cameron said. The applications, filed in May, also include $54 million in expressions of interest for water, sewer, and traffic projects. Cameron said the requests respond to a roughly $1-billion long-term infrastructure need driven by climate change, population growth, and aging systems in older neighbourhoods. The fire hall would also require fire trucks and 18 to 20 additional firefighters, and the city says it needs territorial and federal partners to help pay for the work.
