Federal firearms amnesty extended beyond October 30 expiry date
The Government of Canada has extended the federal firearms amnesty beyond its scheduled October 30, 2026 expiry. The amnesty now runs until 90 days after the Supreme Court of Canada rules on appeals challenging the May 2020 firearms prohibition, a decision not expected before mid-2027. Yukoners and businesses affected by the May 2020, December 2024 and March 2025 prohibitions remain protected from criminal liability while they comply with amnesty conditions. The Yukon government, which opposes the Assault-Style Firearms Compensation Program, is pursuing its own Yukon Firearms Act as a mandate commitment.
